Yeeeeew! What an amazing week. Nine Vetscursions volunteers traveled to Mexico to help sterilize dogs and cats from Tulum and the surrounding communities. With the help of some amazing volunteers and local organizations such as Help Tulum Dogs, Vets In Action, and Alma Animal Tulum, we spayed and neutered 255 animals in 4 days! In total, we had 4 veterinarians, 3 surgeons and one overseeing prep and recovery, 4 veterinary technicians, and countless animal lovers who volunteered their valuable time to make this happen.

We started the first day of the campaign working out some kinks, as was expected, but we quickly found the rhythm and ended the day with some solid numbers to start the 4 day campaign.

45 dogs - 27 females spayed and 18 males neutered

21 cats - 13 females spayed and 8 males neutered

66 animals sterilized on day 1

We jumped right into it on day 2 which would prove to be our biggest day of the campaign. The entire team really pushed themselves and helped a lot pets. Several members of the local community joined in a cheer and applause toward the end of the day which was a timely reminder of why we were there.

55 dogs - 37 females spayed and 18 males neutered

30 cats - 7 females spayed and 23 males neutered

85 animals sterilized on day 2

The third day of the campaign took us out of Tulum about an hours' drive into the Yucatan to a small pueblo called Hidalgo y Cortes with barely over 100 residents. This was true vet med in the jungle. It was a quieter day but everyone was happy for a change of pace after the long day prior.

20 dogs - 7 females spayed and 13 males castrated

10 cats - 3 females spayed and 7 males castrated

30 animals sterilized on day 3

Our final day of the campaign was a push to the finish line. It ended up being our second biggest day yet. It was the only day that our surgeons were set up in the open air which was a relief given the heat. It was an emotional end of the campaign but everyone was saying the same thing, "when is the next trip?" We'll be back, Mexico!

50 dogs - 26 females spayed and 24 males castrated

25 cats - 19 females spayed and 6 males castrated

75 animals sterilized on day 4
